Using Jewelers’ Rouge to Keep a Fuel Tank Polished
You will need jeweler’s rouge and a muslin wheel 6” to 8” in diameter. The higher the speed on the wheel, the better—10,000 RPM is ideal.
Being generous with the jeweler’s rouge, use the exterior edge of the wheel to buff an area of the tank no larger than the size of your hand. Get that one area looking great, then move on to another.
There will be a black residue on the surface of the tank. Remove it with acetone, lacquer thinner, or baking soda and a rag.
Removing Bacteria from Fuel Tanks
Remove your fuel tank and drain off the fuel. Then, partially fill the tank with high concentrations of Simple Green, a high-alkaline cleaning solution. Another option is sodium tripolyphosphate, which is a chemical found in many household cleaning products.
Agitate the solution for 30 to 60 minutes, then rinse well with water. Next, rinse well with a mild bleach solution to neutralize the alkalinity. Finally, rinse well once more with water.
Fuel can be treated with a biocide treatment to prevent future contamination.
