🛠️ Measuring Your Fuel Tank – A Guide to Getting It Right

Built Right Starts with Measured Right.

At AlumiTank, every tank we build is engineered to meet your exact specifications — but the quality of our work starts with the quality of the information you give us.

Even if two tanks look similar, details like fitting layouts, baffles, draw tube setups, or cap styles can vary. That's why accurate measurement is critical — especially for custom, obsolete, or specialty builds.

📏 What We Need from You

  • Accurate tank dimensions (always measure from the weld seam)
  • Fill neck location (front, center, or rear)
  • Which side of the truck the tank is mounted on
  • Locations and types of fittings, sending units, draw tubes, vents, and mounting bands
  • Photos help — but we require a dimensioned drawing to proceed

📝 Download the Measurement Worksheet

Use our measurement form to record and send in your specs. We have different worksheets based on tank type. Unsure which one? Give us a call — we’ll guide you.

📌 Final Notes

  • Whenever possible, measure the tank off the truck
  • Use a flexible tape or caliper for precision
  • Include notes about reused fittings or non-OEM layouts
  • Photos of the tank next to a tape measure are extremely helpful

🔩 Finding the Thread Size You Need

To determine the correct pipe thread size, use a tape measure or caliper to measure the inside diameter (ID) of the threaded hole where you want to install a fitting — or the outside diameter (OD) of your existing fitting.

Once you’ve measured, use the chart below to match your ID/OD to the closest pipe thread size. (Dimensions shown are approximate; rounding up may be necessary.)
